Fundraising Update: We did it! “Three Buildings for Sokil” and Beyond.
June 2025 - Between October 2024 and March 2025, our community rose to an extraordinary challenge—and met it. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our matching donor and the hundreds of Plastuny and friends who stepped forward during that window, Novyi Sokil raised over $250,000 in just six months! This surge in giving pushed our “Three Buildings for Sokil” capital campaign well over its target, for which we are extremely grateful. Special thanks go out to our matching donor, the Burkehaven Family Foundation, and to the leadership of Plast USA for providing valuable guidance and precedents to bolster our fundraising efforts.
As we bring this successful capital fundraising campaign to a close*, we turn our attention to a broader, ongoing fundraising effort—one that will support the day-to-day needs and long-term sustainability of the oselia.
Unlike other summer camps, Plast USA summer camps do not rely on attendance fees to generate significant operational funding for its properties beyond covering the direct costs of summer programming. This is by design: keeping attendance fees affordable helps ensure that camp remains accessible to as many families as possible. But it also means that maintenance, repairs, and infrastructure upgrades depend almost entirely on the generosity of donors like you.
Our beloved Novyi Sokil is now 75 years old. Each passing year brings new infrastructure challenges. Plumbing issues arise. Aging equipment must be replaced. Roofs require maintenance as shingles reach their life expectancy. Storm damage must be repaired. These are not glamorous expenses. But they are essential to keep the camp safe, functional, and in the best possible condition for the next generation.
In recent years, Novyi Sokil has also welcomed a growing number of Ukrainian refugees—children of families who have fled Ukraine due to Russia’s unjust invasion. In keeping with Plast’s values and mission, Novyi Sokil subsidizes a portion of qualifying applicants’ attendance fees. These efforts are both essential and morally imperative. Yet they also place additional pressure on an already limited budget.
So, if you hold cherished memories of Novyi Sokil, like singing by the vatra, breathing in the scent of pine needles on a wooded trail, or falling asleep to the gentle rustle of leaves outside, we invite you to pass that nostalgia forward. Your support—whether occasional or ongoing, modest or substantial—makes a real and immediate impact.
Together, we can ensure that Novyi Sokil continues to create lasting memories that future generations of Ukrainian scouts will likewise treasure!

Construction of Building #3 of the “Three Buildings for Sokil” Campaign is being planned - additional donations needed!
Summer 2024 — The "3 Buildings for Sokil" ("Три Будівлі для Соколу") fundraising campaign was launched in 2018 to raise money for replacing three dated buildings. The first building, a barrack for the youngest scouts, was successfully completed in 2019.
Early in 2020, our attention was necessarily focused on the urgent purchase of the newly available adjacent property that was the subject of a dedicated (and successful—see below) fundraising campaign.
In 2021 the second building was renovated: a poolhouse including lifeguard accommodations, and equipment room, and two change rooms.
The third building to be reconstructed will be the medical/ administration building, our most ambitious project to date. This important building houses our medical facilities and serves as the center of camp operations. The medical facilities must be modernized with a patient bathroom having a shower and additional patient rooms, all in compliance with governing building and accessibility codes.
To secure the future of our cherished campground as a safe, enjoyable, and well-maintained space, regular investment in its upkeep and improvement is vital. A cornerstone of this effort is the medical and administration building, which will play a crucial role in enhancing safety, health services, and event coordination for future scouting activities.
